HONDA WINS BEST SAFETY INNOVATION AWARD FROM AJAC FOR NEW AIRBAG

The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) has given Honda its prestigious Best Safety Innovation Award this week for Honda’s impressive new “catcher’s mitt” airbag.

The new airbag is designed to “catch” the front passenger’s head and avoid the head from rolling off the cushion, in the process enhancing safety and preventing serious injuries.

“In our fundamental pursuit of Safety for Everyone and the enhanced safety of Acura, Honda, and the vehicles of other brands—all for the benefit of society—we are incredibly honoured that our new passenger front airbag has been recognized with the 2021 AJAC Innovation Award for Best Safety Innovation.” Eric Heitkamp, Honda Principal Crashworthiness Engineer, and co-inventor of the new airbag.

The innovative airbag uses four compartments as opposed to just one cushion like in a traditional airbag. This prevents the head from partially avoiding the airbag or rotating severely.

The new Honda airbag will find its way into numerous new Honda models in the future. Stay tuned!
